Landscaping a swimming pool is a little more complicated than landscaping a backyard and hence, it requires a decent amount of planning. However, even a non-professional can still accomplish it. Believe me; it is surely worth the effort. You can actually create a small heaven right outside your home.
Take notes and plan
When you are thinking of different ideas for swimming pool designs then remember to note down the colours, patterns, textures, curves of your own house. This will give you something to work with. Work with the colours and textures that you already have in your home. This will give certain continuity to your landscape and the pool can work to complement your home.
Choosing plants for your swimming pool
Plants will help to soften the pool equipment lines. They will also work to provide you privacy and help the pool to blend beautifully with the rest of the landscape. Low-maintenance choices are broad-leafed evergreens, ground covers and ornamental grasses. You can have some trees on south side of your pool. This will give you shade on the hot days and will not even block the sun on cooler days. Avoid trees that will attract insects or bees or have deep root systems, which might later on damage your pool.
Ensuring safety as well as privacy
If you have children or pets, then you will need to fence the pool for safety. If you can lock up your complete pool area then it will ensure safety and put your mind at rest. If you want privacy then go for the six feet high fence or higher that has boards. A basket-weave fence or lattice will give semi-privacy while allowing light and air to pass through.
Lighting up your pool
You can add lights to the deep end of the pool, around its perimeter and on its steps. You can use incandescent or halogen quartz lights. However, fiber optics work best.
Wind protection
You should use baffles or windbreaks to redirect the cold air currents. First, you will need to determine the direction of the wind currents. This will allow you to position your baffle appropriately. Alternatively, you can even use dense shrubbery.
Decks and patios
You will need to design an appropriate deck that is easy on your bare feet and is also slip-resistant. While pavers are more expensive compared to concrete and bricks, they provide a better option than the latter. They are available in different patterns as well as colours and they move and do not crack, when the ground moves. This makes them safer.
